Sítio São Judas Tadeu is located in the city of Cristina, in the south of Minas Gerais, in the Serra da Mantiqueira region, at an elevation of 1200 meters.
The region, with mountainous topography, with an average annual rainfall of 1600 mm and an average temperature of 18.8°C, has a differentiated climate and soils favorable to the production of specialty coffees.
Coffee cultivation began on the property 40 years ago, always seeking quality in the coffee produced. Mr. Rocha and his entire family are dedicated to growing coffee sustainably, preserving the environment.
The farm has reserves for preserving springs and native forests, which shelter large plant species and several wild animals. In the area, it is usual to see such species as the maned wolf, armadillo, tamarin, guan, saffron finch, and hawk, among others.
The property participates in Fair Trade; this means that the producers and traders have met Fair Trade Standards. The Fair Trade Standards are designed to address the imbalance of power in trading relationships, unstable markets and the injustices of conventional trade. Also is located in the area holding the Mantiqueira de Minas Geographical Indication (GI), that refers to products or services that have a specific geographical origin, which recognizes the reputation, quality and characteristics of the product related to the production site.
Coffee processing system
The harvest is selective, done when the berries are well ripened; they are picked by hand over cloths, avoiding contact with the ground. On the same day it is picked, the coffee is put into bags and transported to the processing center located on the farm itself. Next, the coffee is washed, and during this process the beans are separated. Next it is dried on cement patios and can, if necessary, go to a dryer for a final drying phase in which it reaches the ideal moisture level. After drying, the coffee is placed in wooden granaries to rest for a period of at least 30 days. After resting, the beans are processed and separated into lots, then stored in COCARIVE warehouses in Carmo de Minas.
Concern about quality
From the beginning of production, Sítio São Judas Tadeu relies upon guidance of agronomists from COCARIVE (Carmo de Minas Cooperative) and ASCARIVE (Vale do Rio Verde Coffee Grower Association). Working with coffee is done with dedication, always striving for quality in the beans, having traceability from the harvest to depositing them in the COCARIVE warehouse. The lots are stored in the COCARIVE warehouse, which nowadays has the most modern machinery to prepare and process the coffee lots.
