The Hacienda was bought in 1910 by María’s Grandfather, Mr. Luis Pedro Aguirre, who then gave it to María’s mother, María del Socorro Aguirre Tinoco de Zelaya. Finally the land was given to María Zelaya, who owns and manages nowadays. But now she has agreed to receive help from her nephews Ricardo and Luis Pedro Zelaya. The initial coffee yield was 200 (46 kgs) grean bean and now the yield peak has increased up to 2700 (46 kgs) green bean. And it continues to grow. The farm also dedicates to Holstein cattle that international juries have classified as the best dairy cattle in Guatemala, having milk yields of 26 liters per cow. Part of the manure used in the farm comes from the cattle production, complemented with chemical fertilization but the organic fertilization reduces the chemical at the minimum. Carmona is a farm that grew coffee in a very conventional, old fashioned way. In 2012, it was strongly attacked by rust and Maria realized she needed to change a little bit her agricultural management in order overcome the disease. With a little help of Luis Pedro Zelaya/Ricardo Zelaya, she started working in tissue management, plant nutrition and pest/disease control. In the medium term, all their hard work will result in major yields and healthier renewed plants, and the same excellent quality coffee she has delivered to her clients.
