The Union of Agricultural Cooperatives SOPPEXCCA was born in 1997 and is located in Jinotega, Nicaragua. UCA SOPPEXCCA began its insertion in the international coffee market in 1999, in which 68 producers participated. In its work process, more producers have been integrating into the model. The organization has a membership of 16 grassroots Cooperatives, which participate in this coffee business. 517 producers of these 170 are women. UCA SOPPEXCCA markets its coffee to the United States and Europe under fair and organic trade labels.
As a cooperative organization, UCA SOPPEXCCA is developing a working model of broad democratic participation from the spaces of producers in their base cooperatives, as well as the integration of the Youth Movement, from which coffee tasters and baristas have been trained and promoters who follow the certification standards.
UCA SOPPEXCCA, has businesses centers that generate income for the operation of the entire coffee business, from the farm to roasting and grinding. Coffee is also offered in the three coffee shops that UCA SOPPEXCCA has. The Escambray farm is located within all these business centers, where coffee and cocoa are produced.
The Escambray farm is located in the Escambray community, Jinotega municipality, Jinotega department, Nicaragua; 55 kilometers northeast of the Jinotega departmental capital and of the UCA SOPPEXCCA’s office.
This farm has an area of 14 Ha, distributed as follows: productive coffee area 4 Ha, developing coffee area 5 Ha, cocoa area 2 Ha, mountain area 1.4 Ha, the variety that is being managed is the Caturra variety. It is located at a height of 900 to 1,000 meters above the sea level.
It is managed under conventional technology using mostly organic inputs. The coffee is grown 100% under shade, among spices such as ingas, timber and citrus.
