MALACARA was the main farm among the various farms in the Santa Ana Volcano owned by Alvarez family. Its unusual name means BAD FACE after a family of a person.
THE FARM ́S HISTORY: It goes back to 1888 when Rosa Valle inherited the property. Rosa was married to Francisco Alvarez Lalinde, brother of Don Rafael Alvarez Lalinde, great grandfather of José Guillermo (Epe) and his sister Maria de los Angeles – fourth generation coffee growers – are now responsible for the farm’s management through their company PERGAMINO, S. A. de C. V.
Since the beginning of the XX century the MALACARA brand has been recognized by the coffee world as being one of the best coffees produced in El Salvador. Due to the importance of the brand, in 1929 the Name MALACARA 5000 PIES (5000 feet over sea level) was legally registered in Germany. In the National Geographic magazine of November 1944, MALACARA Coffee was considered the best coffee of El Salvador. In 1959 MALACARA Coffee represented in the International Fair held in Hamburg, Germany as the main export product from El Salvador. The Alvarez Family exported the Strictly High Grown (SHG) coffee from their farms in the Santa Ana volcano, under the brand MALACARA 5000 PIES, mainly to Germany and The United States. COFFEE QUALITY: Since the beginning MALACARA represented the best quality of coffee harvested by the Alvarez family in the “Coffee Gold Belt” of the Santa Ana Volcano, the quality in the cup is considered to have its origins from the location of the farm; the type of soil, the amount of light and its microclimate, these are fact given by nature. Several varieties are platted in the farm kept under Ingas shade, among them Red Bourbon, Orange Bourbon, Pacamara, SL28 and some Gesha.
MALACARA qualifies as a specialty coffee. This means that the cherries, under shade, are picked when they reach the proper ripeness. Daily lots are sent the coffee mill where they are selected and processed separately to ensure origin and authenticity. The selection process continues up to the time the coffee goes to the market by constantly ensuring uniformity, size and lack of defects.
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY: There is a school where children from the surrounding areas attend up to the ninth grade. We have a clinic where people are treated for minor illnesses, get their vaccines and others at no costs to them. There is a soccer field used by the community, good housing is also provided for the employees, five families live permanently on the farm that provides employment for 20 permanent workers and about 100 people during harvest.
ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES: The farm has been diversified into other crops such as avocado, these crops gives employment to more people during the year. Many local species of trees still exists and are kept and diversified in the farm to maintain the rich flora and fauna of the area intact.
