“La Virgen” Estate, Estelí
Udo Hermann Ernst Spies
Udo Hermann arrived in Nicaragua with the German
Technical Cooperation during the 80s. He felt in love with the
simplicity of the people of Nicaragua and with the years he also felt in
love with a brunette from Pueblo Nuevo, the province of Estelí.
When he bought his farm it was practically a virgin
mountain. But with the advice of local friends he began in the coffee
business.
He first built the “casa hacienda” (farm house) where
he lives and even though he has no electricity in the property, Don Udo
adapted perfectly to the conditions of the farm.
“All my life I´ve lived in big cities in my country.
Please believe me, to live here has no price nor comparison. The peace
and silence can be your best company. The birds and wild animal make me
feel as part of Mother Nature” smiling he continues…
“I married a woman from this town, who also gave a
new family” says Don Udo while he hugs his daughter ------
You can see the young ones arriving at the farm after
school to help their parents in their work. They help with the logistic
in the farm. During the picking season near 120 workers can be found
here.
All these efforts have allowed them to win the price
of the “cup of excellence”. The flavor and specific characteristic of
their coffee makes it to be part of the best coffee production of Esteli.
“We are paying a huge debt to the bank. We made a loan in previous
years. But we are sure we will continue moving forward. By being within
the 7 first places of the cup of excellence contest for sure can get us
better prices” says his daughter, who was present in this conversation.
